Marriage & Couples Therapy
Have you and your partner been having issues in your marriage/relationship that you haven’t been able to resolve on your own? You’re not the only married couple to go through this. If you don’t want to let the problems get worse, it’s time to get professional support. TCHD will walk with you during this period.
Both marriage and couples counselling can be helpful throughout the entirety of a relationship. Our clinicians can help you deal with specific relationship issues, create a stronger bond, and develop better ways to communicate and express your respective opinions and emotions.
Couples therapy is for couples who have unhealthy patterns of behaviour or would like to strengthen the relationship. You will work alongside your clinician, to identify factors contributing to conflict or issues within the relationship and develop ways to build trust as a couple.
Premarital counselling for couples can also be very beneficial. Couples thinking of taking the next step toward marriage can meet with our clinician where they can develop goals and objectives that would strengthen the relationship. This also highlights the weak areas and develops strategies to deal with such.
While some issues might be similar for couples, we are also cognisant that this is not a “one size fit all” scenario. Therefore, for each couple, the goals are unique to your issue/s. In some instances, some of the issues you might face and develop goals to manage would be:
- Identify and address the root causes of the issue/s.
- Identify very specific areas that need attention.
- Examine the history and the beginning of arguments, and conflicts in the relationship.
- Develop and improve healthy communication styles and patterns.
- Develop skills for conflict resolution and problem-solving.
- Reducing feelings of resentment
- Sexual tension within the relationship
- Performance anxiety issues
There are differences between Couples and Marriage counselling. Marriage counselling helps you work through very specific issues and helps prepare you for future challenges. Again, it’s about education and support and can help with communication and conflict-resolution skills. With the partnership between you and your clinician, you and your partner will explore, identify, and perfect what you want to get out of marriage therapy and set realistic goals.
Marriage counselling can:
- Help you face your struggles together.
- Be present.
- Create a safe space where you can talk through differences, avoiding them from escalating into major conflicts.
- Create a strong foundation.
